As Tom Alexander prepares to retire from his role as President & CEO of Fred Finch Youth & Family Services, we mark the close of an extraordinary chapter—one defined by leadership, compassion, and an unwavering belief in people.
Over the past several months, staff, board members, family, and community partners gathered across Northern and Southern California to celebrate Tom. There was music, laughter, and a Beatles-themed spirit that felt fitting for someone who has spent his career bringing people together. But what stood out most were the voices—stories and reflections that, together, paint a picture of a leader whose impact reaches far beyond a title.
From the very beginning, Tom has never been a distant leader. He has always been present—in the big moments and the small ones. Those who have worked alongside him describe a rare ability to move seamlessly between vision and detail, never losing sight of the people at the center of the work.
“Tom has the ability to be high in the treetops and then down in the leaves… that level of detail and care—it really comes through.”— Daniela Ogden, Vice President of Development & Communications
That care shows up not only in strategy, but in action. Staff shared story after story of a leader who steps in without hesitation—whether supporting an event, solving a problem, or simply making sure people feel supported. It’s a hands-on approach that has shaped not just outcomes, but culture.
Under Tom’s leadership, Fred Finch has expanded its reach to serve thousands of children and families across California. But just as importantly, he has cultivated a culture rooted in dignity, belonging, and deep respect—for those served and for those doing the work. Staff describe an environment where people feel connected to the mission and empowered to show up as their full selves—something that doesn’t happen by accident, but by design.
From the board’s perspective, that same intentional leadership has been foundational. Board Chair Lacy Vong reflected on what it takes to guide an organization doing complex, high-stakes work—and the qualities Tom has brought to that responsibility.
“It takes someone with judgment, steadiness, and deep commitment to lead this work—and Tom brings all of that, along with so much heart.”— Lacy Vong, Board Chair
She also emphasized the legacy Tom leaves behind—not just in growth and innovation, but in the strength and sustainability of the organization itself. Through thoughtful planning and a deep investment in people, he has positioned Fred Finch to continue thriving well into the future.
That steadiness has been especially meaningful during moments of uncertainty. Former Board Chair Greg Kershaw recalled that even in the most challenging times, Tom never lost sight of what matters most.
“Even in the middle of everything, he would start by asking, ‘How’s your family?’ That tells you everything about the kind of leader he is.”— Greg Kershaw, Former Board Chair
Across the organization, staff echoed that same sense of humanity. Dr. Teresa Chapa, Vice President of Government Affairs, spoke about Tom’s openness to ideas and his commitment to supporting others.
“You’re open to ideas, generous with opportunities, and you really support what matters to people.”— Dr. Teresa Chapa
Even now, that forward-thinking mindset continues to shape the organization’s path.
“He’s still saying, ‘I have ideas—I want to build on what we’ve started.’”— Dr. Teresa Chapa
And in the day-to-day moments that often go unseen, Tom’s presence has made a lasting impression. Rosalinda Rodriguez, Program Specialist, shared a story that reflects his instinct to simply show up.
“We asked him the day before, and he just said, ‘Tell me what I need to do.’ And he made it one of the most memorable events we’ve had.”— Rosalinda Rodriguez, Program Specialist
While Tom’s professional impact is far-reaching, some of the most meaningful reflections came from his family—offering a glimpse into the person behind the role. His children, Clay and Bonnie, spoke about a father who was always present, no matter how full his plate.
“There was never a time our dad didn’t show up—for games, for school, for us. He was always there.”— Clay & Bonnie Alexander
Their words speak to something deeper than balance—they reflect a consistency of care that extends across every part of Tom’s life.
His wife, Karen, shared a powerful reflection on the foundation of that care—tracing it back to a life shaped by resilience, love, and optimism.
“He came into this world bringing joy and love into a family that needed it—and that’s what he’s done ever since.”— Karen Alexander
That sense of optimism is something Tom himself named in his remarks, grounding both his life and his work in a simple but enduring belief.
“I was born into optimism, and into a belief in people—and especially in the strength of families.”— Tom Alexander
That belief has guided his leadership at Fred Finch—not just to serve children and families, but to walk alongside them, helping them recognize their own strength and capacity.
Even now, Tom is quick to redirect recognition to the people around him.
“I am one person in a huge community… it’s the staff—past, present, and future—who make this organization special.”— Tom Alexander
That humility, paired with vision and heart, is what so many have come to know and value.
As he steps into this next chapter, Tom leaves behind more than an organization. He leaves behind a culture of compassion, a community grounded in purpose, and a legacy that will continue to shape lives for years to come.
From all of us—staff, board, families, and community—thank you, Tom.

“Many Pieces, One Community”
