Training Description

This training examines the profound impact that caregiver substance use has on the development, safety, and well-being of system-involved youth. Participants will gain an understanding of how substance use disorders disrupt caregiving capacity, attachment, and stability. Using trauma-informed frameworks, lectures, case studies, and group discussions, attendees will learn strategies to identify the risks and protective factors associated with caregiver substance use. Emphasis will be placed on practical strategies, collaboration across systems of care, and relational strategies that support resilience and healing in affected youth.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least 4 developmental, behavioral, or emotional impacts of caregiver substance use on system-involved youth.

  • Explain 3 ways in which caregiver substance use contributes to trauma, instability, and risk within child welfare and juvenile justice populations.
