Training Description

Participants will learn how intimate partner violence specifically impacts the LGBTQ communities compared to the heterosexual and cisgender communities, will receive a brief background of LGBTQ challenges, especially among youth, and learn how to become an ally.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn…  

  • How Intimate Partner Violence in the LGBTQ+ communities differ from IPV among the cisgender community with partners of the opposite sex
  • About vulnerabilities faced by the LGBTQ+ communities, especially among youth
  • How to utilize LGBTQ+ affirmative and inclusive practices and interventions with their clientele

• Defining Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

– Comparison of heterosexual versus LGBTQ cycle of violence

• Factors contributing to intimate partner violence (IPV) in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities

– The California LGBTQ Reducing Mental Health Disparities Population Report

• Vulnerabilities faced by the LGBTQ+ communities

– Youth-specific challenges

11:00-11:15: Break (CEUs will not be issued for this time)

11:15-12:45

• The manifestation of IPV in different age groups with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ youth as well as the impact of youth with LGBTQ+ caregivers that are experiencing IPV

• Obstacles to seeking support around IPV

• Making your organization more LGBTQ-inclusive
