Training Description
This training explores collaborative problem solving as a relational and communication-based approach to supporting autistic system-involved youth. Participants will examine how listening to understand, shared meaning-making, and youth voice can reduce miscommunication and escalation while increasing felt safety and engagement for system-involved youth. Grounded in current research on autism, trauma, and relational mismatch, the training emphasizes adult interpretation and response rather than changing youth behavior. Attendees will learn how collaborative approaches can strengthen relationships with system-involved youth, improve youth participation in planning conversations, and support placement stability for system-involved youth without providing treatment or therapeutic services.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
Identify at least three common sources of miscommunication between autistic youth and adults within child welfare and care systems.
