Training Description

A little of 20% of new HIV diagnoses in the US and dependent areas were among youth. In order to help prevent HIV infection in system involved youth, those that support them need to understand risk factors, prevention strategies and how to teach this information to system involved youth and their families. HIV+ system involved youth and their families need support to manage the medical and psychosocial issues they face. In this class we will focus on prevention, signs and symptoms, testing, stages of infection, legal issues, social and cultural issues, preparing youth for loss of a parent from HIV, mental health issues and resources. This course meets the pre-licensure requirements for HIV/AIDS 7 hours, for individuals applying for a license with the Board of Behavioral Sciences. This class includes lecture, video and interactive activities. Participants must be present with their camera on and prepared to participate in the class activities.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

· Identify 3 strategies for preventing HIV infection, 4 signs or symptoms of HIV infection, and 3 stages of HIV infection;

· Explain 2 social and 2 cultural issues related to HIV infection; and

· Identify at least 3 mental health issues related to having or knowing someone with HIV.

Meet Our Trainer

Rachel Michaelsen, LCSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked in HMOs, public agencies, and private practice as both a mental-health provider and a supervisor for over thirty years. Prior to graduate school Rachel worked in women’s and reproductive health as a patient advocate and health educator and she wrote her master’s thesis on social worker’s knowledge and attitudes regarding HIV.  She has taught courses in HIV, human sexuality, DSM-5, clinical supervision, law and ethics, childhood psychopathology, time management, vicarious traumatization and energy psychology at universities, conferences, and mental-health agencies.

This course meets the qualifications for (7.0) BBS CE hours for LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences & is provided by Fred Finch Youth Center, CAMFT Provider #045295.
