Training Description

In work with system involved youth and their families, it is important to facilitate a healthy attitude about sex and sexuality. Many system involved youth have had negative or traumatic sexual experience which may impact their sexuality throughout their lifespan. Learn to understand, identify and talk about sex and sexuality with youth, caregivers, family members and others involved in the lives of system involved youth in a way that promotes ease of conversation, healthy decision making and an understanding of consent. Topics to be covered include: anatomy and physiology, sexual identity, sexual diversity, cultural considerations, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), birth control, menstruation, talking to youth about sex, sexual functioning, sexual dysfunctions and disorders, sexual consent, healthy relationships, and sex therapy. This course meets the pre-licensure requirements for Human Sexuality, 10 hours, for individuals applying for a license with the Board of Behavioral Sciences. This class will include lecture, video, small group and interactive activities. Participants will be asked to have their cameras on and participate in the class discussions and activities.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of sexual functioning;

2. Explain how at least 8 types of birth control work and the pros and cons of each;

3. Identify the symptoms and treatment methods for at least 4 sexually transmitted infections;

4. Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy sexual functioning;

5. List the elements of a healthy relationships;

6. Explain the process of obtaining sexual consent;

7. Educate youth and families about the healthy diversity of sexuality;

8. Perform a sexual functioning assessment;

9. Determine when youth are experiencing sexual dysfunctions.

Meet Our Trainer

Rachel Michaelsen, LCSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked in HMOs, public agencies, and private practice as both a mental-health provider and a supervisor for more than thirty years. She has taught courses in clinical supervision, law and ethics, diagnoses, childhood psychopathology, vicarious traumatization, trauma informed care and energy psychology at universities, conferences, and mental-health agencies. She provides consultation and supervision to agencies and maintains a private practice.

This 2-day course meets the qualifications for (10.0) BBS CEUs for LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences & is provided by Fred Finch Youth Center, CAMFT Provider #045295.
