Training Description

The concept of the "Image of the Child," introduced by educator and philosopher Loris Malaguzzi, challenges adults to reflect on the assumptions, beliefs, and expectations they hold about children and youth. These perceptions can influence how we engage with system-involved youth (SIY), create supportive learning environments, respond to behavior, and promote healthy development and well-being. Through guided reflection, discussion, and practical application, participants will explore how adopting a strengths-based, capable image of the child and youth can support effective relationships, learning experiences, and positive outcomes for system-involved youth  and families.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least three ways personal perceptions about system-involved youth may influence adult interactions and decision-making.

  • Compare deficit-based and strengths-based perspectives of system-involved youth by using at least one case example and reflective discussion.
