Training Description

This two-hour training focuses on applying Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to support both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence (DV), with an emphasis on promoting safety and ethical practice within efforts to support system-involved youth (SIY) and families. Participants will explore how to build trust with victims, guiding them through ambivalence and decision-making, while learning how to address denial and resistance in perpetrators within system-involved families using MI strategies. The session will also cover the ethical considerations of MI in domestic violence cases, including balancing supportive, introspective strategies with safety planning. Through interactive group activities, participants will practice MI skills and apply them to guide both victims and perpetrators toward meaningful behavior change. The material will be delivered by PowerPoint presentation, short video clips, group discussion, breakout (small group) discussions and participant workbook (handout).
